Artists' annual exhibition returns to Margate Art Museum

The exhibition promises an inspiring showcase of local talent, individual perspectives and creative expression.

The much-anticipated annual exhibition of Art by the Sea, a local art club, opens at the Margate Art Museum on November 6, running throughout the December/January holiday season.

The ever-popular Opening Night takes place on November 5, at 17:30 for 18:00.

The story of Art by the Sea began more than 50 years ago, when a small group of enthusiastic artists gathered at a home in Uvongo and formed a club that would grow into a vibrant artistic community.

Regular meetings, shared learning and exhibitions soon became hallmarks of the group. In time, Art by the Sea played an instrumental role in establishing the Margate Art Museum, which remains the club’s home today. The club now boasts more than 50 active members.

Every Tuesday morning, members gather for two to three hours of painting, exchanging ideas, sharing their passion and refining their artistic skills and techniques.

The last Tuesday of each month is dedicated to Art Appreciation Day, when members bring along their latest works for fellow artists to admire and critique in a spirit of constructive support and camaraderie.

Space and facilities have, until now, limited the club’s capacity, with prospective members being placed on a waiting list. There is good news, however: alterations are currently under way, creating the prospect of welcoming new members in the new year.

The work of Art by the Sea’s talented artists can be found in homes across South Africa and abroad. Over the years, the club has established itself as a leading contributor to the visual arts on the South Coast.

Its members exhibit their work at venues throughout the year, including the monthly Uvongo Art-in-the-Park exhibition, occasional Art in the Forest events in Tanglewood adjacent to the Ramsgate Waffle House, the South Coast Mall Food Court, the IsiVivane and Sands galleries, and various other venues.

The highlight of the club’s artistic calendar is undoubtedly this annual exhibition at the Margate Art Museum, where the collective creativity of its members takes centre stage.

Club chairperson Gordon Dinner explains that this year’s theme, “Where We Are”, offers a particularly exciting opportunity. “It provides scope for an exhibition of exceptional variety and insight into the life experiences of each artist,” he says.

For art lovers, residents and holidaymakers alike, the exhibition promises an inspiring showcase of local talent, individual perspectives and creative expression.
