A HIGH-SPEED chase on the N2 freeway last week led to the arrest of four men, one of whom was a suspected murderer who had been on the run since last year.
Scottburgh and Hibberdene police teamed up last Wednesday to pool information on suspected criminals thought to be heading from Port Shepstone towards Durban.

“The information was circulated on the police radio. Members of the Umlazi K9 unit, returning home after attending court in Port Shepstone, responded as did the Umzinto K9 unit and the Scottburgh SAPS Crime Prevention unit,” said Scottburgh police communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

One of the men apprehended when the vehicle was stopped outside the Scottburgh Mall was wanted for the murder of Constable Siyabonga Mbele (28), an Msinsini policeman, in Hibberdene on November 30 last year. Constable Siyabonga was shot several times and his service pistol was stolen.

The other occupants in the vehicle included a 23-year-old who faced charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and theft of motor vehicle.
A search of the vehicle revealed two bags containing a gas gun and a 9mm pistol (from which the serial number had been removed) loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition. Three balaclavas and two overalls were also found in the hired car. The vehicle was impounded.
