To avoid frustration, ensure you have all the necessary documents before heading to the licensing office.

IS the time drawing closer for you to renew your car licence? Here’s a list of documents you will require and some information to help make the process simpler, compiled by our sister publication, Northglen News
And remember, reminders are no longer sent in the post, so keep track of when your licence is due by setting a reminder on your phone.
Documents
- Identity book
- Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2). If you do not have the renewal notice, or did not receive it in the post, pick up and fill in the ALV1 form (Application for Licensing of Motor Vehicle) from any registering authority or selected post offices.
- Appropriate licensing fees – generally cash only.

You will also need to provide the following details:
- Full names, date of birth, identity number, and business registration number, along with any form of acceptable identification.
- Proof of postal and residential address, by means of any utility account. If your name isn’t on the account you need an affidavit from the person in whose name the account is stating you live at that address.
- If you live in an informal settlement, you need a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councillor confirming your postal and residential address.
- In addition, if your details have changed, you must complete and hand in a NCP form (notification of change in particulars).
- If you are an organisation, you will need to take the organisation’s business certificate, ID of proxy and letter of proxy.
Grace period
Motorists get a 21-day grace period if they have not renewed the expired vehicle licence. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date on your current licence disc and if the licence is not renewed by the end of the grace period, penalties will be charged. Penalties are calculated at one tenth of the licensing fee for every month that the licence remains lapsed.
