Scottburgh Regional Court jails teen for violent rape and robbery

Police are searching for a second suspect.

Sphamandla Miya (18) has been jailed after assaulting, violently raping and robbing a pensioner.

Police stated that the incident occurred on May 4, 2024, after Miya and an accomplice broke into the 60-year-old woman’s home in the Mgolomi area in Mehlomnyama.

She was awakened by a noise after the two gained entry, and they demanded cash and cellphones.

The woman was then assaulted and raped before the suspects fled with R500 cash and her phone.

Police were able to trace and arrest Miya, resulting in him being found guilty for the crimes at the Scottburgh Regional Court on April 30.

As per Saps, Miya received a lengthy sentence for his crimes committed against the elderly woman. He was given five years’ imprisonment for house robbery, 18 years’ imprisonment for rape and five years’ for residential burglary. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Miya was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The investigating officer in the case was Detective Constable Sinegugu Tshona of FCS Port Shepstone.

Investigations into the whereabouts of the second suspect continue.
