Prof Zühlke pointed out that high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

MEDIRITE pharmacies are offering free blood pressure and cholesterol testing between September 23 and 29 in support of World Heart Day on September 29.

To make use of this free service, customers are urged to make an appointment at their nearest MediRite, where a friendly and qualified pharmacist will administer the blood pressure test.

President of the South African Heart Association, Professor Liesl Zühlke said that cardiovascular disease is among the top three causes of death in sub-Saharan Africa. “It is important to protect your heart by having your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked regularly. Both hypertension or high blood pressure and high cholesterol have no major symptoms and the only way to know if you are at risk is to have yourself tested,” explained Prof Zühlke.

Prof Zühlke pointed out that high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. “I would encourage all South Africans to make use of this excellent opportunity to have their blood pressure and cholesterol tested.”

The free blood pressure and cholesterol tests are available at the 147 MediRite pharmacies conveniently located in Checkers and Shoprite supermarkets across South Africa. On the South Coast, the two MediRite pharmacies are at the Hibiscus Mall, Margate (039 3171672) and Southcoast Mall, Shelly Beach (039 3155121).
