WATCH: South Coast Beach Picnic a huge success

Artists also paid a special tribute to the late South African pop star Robbie Malinga, who, if still alive, would have performed with Naima Kay.

Hundreds of revellers were treated to fun and top entertainment over the weekend during the inaugural South Coast Beach Picnic at St Mike’s beach last Saturday.

Initially there were complaints regarding the line-up not featuring many local artists but the founder of Eyadini Umlazi, Jabulani Zama, organised the South Coast Music Conference for local artists at St Mike’s beach last Friday.

The ‘event before the event’ was aimed at teaching local artists about brand building, business management, confidence and many other things. Local artists even got to perform at the conference.

Though there was some negative talk circulating around the hosting of the picnic, experienced artists such as Sjava, Mafikizolo, Mondli Ngcobo, Distruction Boyz, DJ Merlon, Babes Wodumo, Naima Kay, Professor, DJ Tira, Madanono and many others wooed the crowd during their performances.

Artists also paid a special tribute to the late South African pop star Robbie Malinga, who, if still alive, would have performed with Naima Kay. The veteran musician died on Christmas Day last year. According to media reports at the time, the ‘Insimbi’ hit maker had been in and out of hospital and later suffered from anaemia.

Another special performance was that of Mkhonzeni ‘Professor’ Langa who is from Izingolweni. Professor’s performance was special because he got to perform at his hometown after a long time. Even though Professor is an established musician, he wanted to be referred to as a local artist because he is from the area.

Picnic organiser, Jabulani Zama said Eyadini Umlazi was happy with the turnout, because thousands of people attended the event.

He thanked revellers for attending and for their patience in long queues, and those who bought tickets on time.

“We had to end the event a bit early so that people from the surrounding area could sleep. Another issue was picnicgoers were trying to push down the fencing so that they could enter. We had to call more law enforcement personnel to ensure public safety and order. All in all the South Coast Beach Picnic was a huge success.”

He added: “I would like to thank the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality for giving us the chance. The second annual South Coast Beach Picnic will outdo this event.”
