Textile training boosts Marburg workers
All in all, 21 employees graduated, of whom 17 were present at the graduation ceremony last Saturday.
Three Apparel and Textile Association of South Africa (ATASA) member companies recently had their employees attend training courses in the Marburg area of Port Shepstone.
The rural machinist development training was funded by the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing Sectoral Education and Training Authority (FP and M SETA) and was held over nine weeks.
The supervisor training consisted of a 10-week course funded by Vijay Bhagwan Consulting Services, a SETA accredited training provider.
The companies involved were Dirose Enterprises, Shivas Clothing and Prikell Clothing.
All in all, 21 employees graduated, of whom 17 were present at the graduation ceremony last Saturday.
ATASA’s project manager, Ed Besson, said the training was aimed at improving the level of first line management at factory level and giving rural machinists an opportunity to find employment or to become sewing entrepreneurs.

He explained the fibre processing and manufacturing SETA were funding the sewing training and would soon fund further supervisor development training in the area and other needs that are identified for skills development.
“Well done to the management for having the vision to skill their workers and to the employees for achieving their certificates of attendance and SETA credits for the rural sewing initiative. The workers are all members of the Trade Union SACTWU (Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union). A great achievement for South Coast clothing workers,” he said.
