Police arrested a 46-year-old man for being in possession of 655 pieces of abalone (perlemoen) at the Oribi toll plaza this morning.
The man, from Willowvale in the Eastern Cape, was stopped at a vehicle check point. “Officers from Port Shepstone 10111 response centre saw the suspicious vehicle with Eastern Cape registration plates and pulled it over,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

She added that the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was also in possession of a licensed Norinco pistol, a magazine and nine rounds of ammunition. When police searched the vehicle they found a plastic crate filled with the abalone pieces, weighing close to 60 kgs and with an estimated street value of about R90 000.
The man will be charged under the National Bio Diversity Act and will appear in court soon. The Port Shepstone Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) Organised Crime Unit will continue the investigation.
