Elderly security guard assaulted near Freeland Park

The guard was apparently assaulted with his own knobkerrie.

A case of common assault has been opened against a 39-year-old local man who is believed to have assaulted a security guard.

“The 63-year-old security guard was patrolling the premises at Charles Hoffe Park on foot at about 11pm and when he returned to the boom gate, he saw that a vehicle had arrived to enter the premises,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

“Apparently without provocation, an occupant from the vehicle alighted and began assaulting the guard, using the guard’s own knobkerrie.”

The man was arrested and charged at the Scottburgh Saps. Detective Warrant Officer Peter Hattingh of the Scottburgh Saps Detective Service is investigating.

The case was postponed to May 9 and video footage is also to be viewed by court officials at the next hearing.
