A round-up of some recent cases at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court:
• A 21-year-old man from Richards Bay, a second year BComm student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, faced charges of speeding. He pleaded guilty to breaking the law on March 24 on the N2 northbound, where he was clocked at 224kmph in a 120kmph zone. The magistrate emphasised the fact that he was 104kmph over the legal speed limit and posed a threat to other road users, the passengers he was carrying and to himself. He has no previous convictions.

He was sentenced to pay a fine of R8 000 or six months’ imprisonment, of which half was suspended for three years.
• The 25-year-old suspect in a case in involving the recovery of R20 000 worth of stolen property was recovered, was refused bail. His next court appearance is on May 3.

• Another young man appeared in court for being in possession of stolen property worth R5 000. He was granted bail of R500 an the case was postponed to May 3 for further investigation.
