A man and woman appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 23, facing charges of house robbery, attempted carjacking and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm.
Foreign national, Bhekubukhosi Mpofu and a local woman, Ntandoyenkosi Phakathi, were apprehended and detained in Pennington last Saturday evening following a house robbery in the same area.
Both accused were remanded back into police custody pending their next appearance on May 3 for formal bail application.
“A couple living in Pennington Drive had apparently gone out for the day and returned home at about 10pm,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

While the woman went into the house, the man went to check up on three tenants who also live on the property.
He was accosted by three suspects wearing balaclavas, who appeared from round a corner.
One of the attackers held a knife to the man’s throat while the others proceeded to tie up his hands and feet and tape his mouth shut. They demanded keys to his vehicle as well as the driveway gate.
The man was then stabbed in the groin and taken into the main building, where his girlfriend was tied to a chair.
“The suspects loaded the man’s Mercedes with their property and also with a TV that they had taken from the main house but they could not get out of the premises as the gate was secured with a chain and padlock,” said Captain Pandarum.
Fortunately, the couple was able to trigger the panic alarm and a local security company soon arrived.
The suspects bolted from the vehicle. One managed to flee on foot but security personnel were able to apprehend two suspects and handed them over to Scottburgh Saps patrol crew.
The case is being investigated by Detective Constable Dillon Khamisa of the Scottburgh Saps Detective Service. He expects to arrest the third suspect soon.
