Senior ANC Ward 5 branch member gunned down at Umzumbe

Nombuso Mqadi (55) was shot after a branch general meeting.

A call has been made to Police Minister Bheki Cele to put a stop to all political violence in the KwaZulu-Natal province following a string of politically related killings that are yet to be solved.

The call was made by ANC Lower South Coast Region members following yet another senior ANC politician’s death.

Minister Cele is set to make his way to Umzumbe today (Thursday) to visit the family of slain Nombuso Mqadi (55), who was shot dead at her Frankland home in Umzumbe last Saturday.

Ms Mqadi was a senior member in the ANC Ward 5 branch and was shot after a branch general meeting (BGM) had been held in the area.

The ANC in the province is currently holding BGMs to allow for regional congresses to sit before the provincial congress is held.

During this process, many incidents of violence have been reported in other regions, including the Moses Mabhida region where ‘bodyguards’ belonging to politicians were seen drawing firearms and threatening to shoot other members.

ANC Lower South Coast region spokesman Selvan Chetty said Ms Mqadi had been a very active member of the Ward 5 branch leadership.

“Comrade Mqadi was likely to be part of future leadership in the area due to her commitment and dedication to serving the community and the ANC,” said Mr Chetty.

According to Mr Chetty, Ms Mqadi had been vocal on issues and had made compelling arguments during debates and discussions.

“She spoke her mind without fear or favour,” said Mr Chetty.

He added that, while they were aware of speculations around the causes of the shooting, their members should remain calm and let police do their work.

“We call on the SAPS to ensure that a full and thorough investigation is conducted so that the perpetrators are brought to book without delay.”

Police Spokesman Colonel Zandra Wiid confirmed the incident.

Colonel Wiid said the victim had been at her homestead when a man came to the house and asked for the whereabouts of another person.

“When the victim told him she did not know, he allegedly shot her and fled. She was taken to a nearby clinic and then transferred to a Port Shepstone hospital where she died.”

A murder case has been opened and police are investigating.
