Braemar man gets double life sentence for raping niece

The girl's mother, when told that her daughter had slept over at her uncle's house, suspected that something was wrong and questioned her further.

A 26-year-old Braemar man was handed a double life sentence for the rape of his 11-year-old niece.

The man was convicted on two counts of rape. “The man’s niece went missing from her home on November 25, 2016 and returned home the following morning,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The girl’s mother, when told that her daughter had slept over at her uncle’s house, suspected that something was wrong and questioned her further.

It was later established that her daughter had been sexually violated. A medical examination at GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh confirmed this.

The uncle was later arrested and brought to court to stand trial.

Welcoming the sentence, Ugu Cluster commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele commended the investigating officer for securing the conviction.

“Statistics show that most of the sexual abusers and child molesters are known to their victims and many are relatives or family members. Parents need to be more conscious of this fact and be proactive by always knowing where their children are and not leaving them with someone who might take advantage of them. I am pleased that this child predator will spend the rest of his days in prison, away from innocent little girls,” she said.
