Umtamvuna Views: Passionate Ant lands the winner
Although the competition was hot to try to beat that weight, Ant held his lead and claimed the winner's cheque.
MARLIN Ski Boat Club held its seventh annual game fish competition last Friday and Saturday.
Conditions were perfect for the 33 boats competing for the biggest fish.
Water temperatures were great with 22 degrees in deep water and 24 near shore. Not a great number of fish came out, but local retired teacher and passionate fisherman Ant Nel landed the winning fish, a barracuda, weighing in at 35,8kg.

Although the competition was hot to try and beat that weight, Ant held his lead and claimed the R40 000 winner’s cheque.
Two beautiful sailfish were also caught and released back into the ocean. The Port Edward NSRI, under the able leadership of John Nicholas, worked very hard to coordinate launching and landing of boats from the main beach whilst ensuring the whole procedure was safe for beach-goers and fishermen. They were on constant standby, but were fortunately not required for any emergencies. Their hard work was greatly appreciated.
Older people can
Four ‘crazy’ local adventurous hikers embarked on a strenuous four-day hike in Pondoland. A taxi took the group of twelve as close as possible to their first night’s accommodation at Lupatana. On the way they stopped off at the spectacular Magwa Falls and Alison Falls. They had to walk about 6km and wade through the river mouth to get to Drifters Camp. The next morning they set off on their ‘Great Trek’ to experience the essence of the spectacular Wild Coast. They slept and ate in local tribal huts and were continually enlightened about the natural environment, culture and history of the area by their wonderfully patient and knowledgeable guide, Sinegugu Zukulu. Sinegugu grew up in Bizana, Transkei and has gone on to obtain his degree (Stellenbosch) and masters in environmental conservation. He is internationally renowned and is based in Matatiele. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge and is also a professional guide.
Never-ending hills
The 68 km hike was hard work, with one day of walking over huge boulders and finally getting into camp after dark. The weather was perfect and the scenery along the way was spectacular.
The group walked on the beach and over the hills; waded through rivers; were carried in boats across big rivers; and finally reached their finish line at Port St Johns where they boarded a taxi for home… and their soft beds!
The average age of the group was 74, with the oldest being Mollie Hills from Bloemfontein, who was 80.
A great example of what older people can achieve with perseverance and determination! One hiker commented: “Those Pondoland hills are never-ending!”
Jill’s pride
The Trafalgar Garden Club members enjoyed the meeting at the lovely home and garden of Jill Botha of Uvongo. Her steep property is softened by a myriad of unusual plants, including turmeric (which has a lovely waxy flower), orchids and roses. She has a number of interesting large hanging balls of staghorn fern, with a diameter of about a meter. Almost 30 members attended the lovely sunny, social afternoon.
Saluting Yvonne
Yvonne Joseph was the manager/secretary of the Port Edward Country Club for almost 10 years. She recently retired, primarily for health reasons, and was thrilled to receive a wheelchair sponsored by the club and some generous members.
Sad news
Hazel Humes (59) of Port Edward died in Murchison Hospital last Wednesday (25th). She became ill and was taken to hospital by ambulance, but sadly suffered organ failure and died. Hazel was an unassuming and caring person and she will be missed. All news to Philippa.
