Gamalake Sassa office left with no electricity, but it’s back to business as usual

The offices are also expanding, and not moving as rumours are reporting.

Some pensioners trying to get help from the Sassa Gamalakhe office were turned away recently. This was due to the fact that the office had no electricity and was operating with a faulty generator.

One pensioner told the Herald that she had been turned away as they couldn’t help her.

“I just want to know when the electricity will be restored,” she said.

Another resident said he had been visiting the office for over a week and they had been operating on a generator but he was never chased away.

KwaZulu-Natal Sassa spokesman, Mbizeni Mdlalose, said the electricity was off because the previous occupants did not hand over the office’s electricity account to them. “It was a challenge because the administrative process needed to be sorted out first before paying the electricity bill. However, no one was turned away, clients were assisted,” he said.

He added that power was restored and things were back to normal from Friday, May 4.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused to our beneficiaries and potential applicants,” said Mr Mdlalose.

He also addressed the rumour doing the rounds in Gamalakhe with regards to the Sassa offices moving to another location. “The office in Gamalakhe is not planning to move. We are planning to expand the office and we have acquired another house next door as part of the expansion,” he said.
