UPDATE: Margate, Uvongo beach and lagoon closed due to sewage spill

The public is urged to refrain from using this leisure facilities till informed otherwise.

UPDATE:

Ugu Spokesman France Zama has confirmed that Uvongo beach and lagoon are also temporarily closed for swimming and other recreational activities as a precautionary following a spillage into the lagoon as a result of a cracked sewage pipe at the Uvongo bridge.

Repair work is underway and our Environmental Health Services will conduct regular sampling of the beach and lagoon to monitor the levels. The public is urged to refrain from using this leisure facilities till informed otherwise.

Due to a line break in the reticulated sewage system leading into Hunter’s Stream (and on to the main beach at Margate), Margate beach is closed to all activities until further notice.

This is according to Ward 2 Councillor Dave Watson, who added that this includes bathing, swimming and recreational activities.

He added that the break may be difficult to repair as the damaged pipe is under the road and amidst Eskom, Ugu, Telkom and fibre optic cables.

Ugu spokesman, France Zama confirmed that the beach has been temporarily closed as precautionary measure due to a blockage of the main line, resulting in an overflow.
