Worry over pet snake taken to Umtentweni beach

According to Terrence Whittle, owner of Pure Venom, it is not illegal in KwaZulu-Natal to take your pet snake or any other pet to the beach, unless it is an endangered species.

A worried South Coast parent has raised her concerns about snake owners taking their pet snakes to the beach. This comes after the mother saw a python on Umtentweni beach recently.

“What worried me the most is that there was a surf school and a child’s birthday party on the beach and the owner of the snake let the children play with the python,” she said.

She added that she didn’t think a pet python should be allowed in such a public place. “Yes, it may be a pet but a python will always be a python and, as far as I am concerned, a snake is dangerous,” she said.

According to Terrence Whittle, owner of Pure Venom, it is not illegal in KwaZulu-Natal to take your pet snake or any other pet to the beach, unless it is an endangered species.

“As much as it is not illegal, pet owners need to be responsible when it comes to the public being in contact with their pets. When it comes to children, parents need to be responsible too by granting their children permission to touch another person’s pet and supervise them while they touch it,” he explained.
