It’s a wonderful 103 not out for Margates’s Enid

She was treated to flowers, cake, birthday cards and a special visit from her granddaughter.

A Margate woman has celebrated turning 103.

Last Monday, Enid Bowker sat down and shared her stories of the past. She was joined by staff and friends at Hibiscus House at Margate Retirement Village, who sang happy birthday and shared cake and tea with her.

She also received flowers and a beautiful card made by the nursing staff and residents of the Hibiscus Frail Care. She is the oldest person living at the retirement village.

The highlight of Ms Bowker’s birthday was a special visit by her granddaughter, Penny Salt from London. One of the most memorable moments in Ms Bowker’s life was when she heard on her 30th birthday that her husband was going to be released after the war.

“He had been a prisoner of war and was released after five years. That was the best news for me, knowing that he was coming home,” said Ms Bowker.

When asked how she felt, she replied, smiling, “sweet 16”.

Her granddaughter Penny said her grandmother was also amazed about planes. “She always wonders how they get them to fly into the air. She is a wonderful person and I call her ‘Mary Poppins’ because she is perfect in every way and she can do anything.”
