The bird and its rescuer caused quite a fuss on the Umzimkulu bridge recently.

Justin Sadler of Southport had a very interesting morning recently.

He was driving along the Umzimkulu bridge (minding his own business) when he spotted an injured hadeda sitting at the side of the road.

Being the crazy animal lover he is, Justin decided to collect the injured bird.

The injured bird.

On his way back to collect the bird, he saw that three men had stopped in the middle of the road and were stuffing the bird into a packet, ready to put into their car.

Justin stopped them, and told them he wanted the bird so he could take it to Michelle Pearson, owner and founder at Second Chance Avian Rescue.

The men refused to hand over the bird, so Justin called a friend, who sent a message for help on a local WhatsApp group.

Lazer Security responded immediately, and the bird was eventually handed over to Justin.

Justin then drove, with the bird, to Michelle’s house, with the men following.

Peter van der Hoven from Lazer also followed Justin as he was concerned about his safety.

When Justin stopped in Shelly Beach, the men stopped too, causing a minor accident, before speeding off.

The bird was taken to  veterinarian Doctor Leon Bruggemann of Margate Vet Hospital, but it had to be  euthanised due to the severity of its injury.

Journalist’s note: Thanks to the community for pulling together to help try save this bird’s life.
