Bogus car guards given the boot in Scottburgh
This was just the first awareness campaign and it is hoped the general public will heed the advice given.
AN awareness campaign to rid the town of bogus car guards was carried out by members of the Scottburgh Saps Community Policing Forum recently.
These car guards have been – and still are – harassing people in Scott Street for money. According to police, these fake car guards are usually drug addicts and are using the money given to them to support their drug habits.
This then encourages them to stay longer and possibly signal others to come into the area as the community is feeding them.

When the CPF members took to the streets, they encountered only a handful of these car guards on the day, but still spoke to them and warned them to leave or they would have to face the consequences should they be caught in the act again.
Besides warning these people, CPF members also spoke to several members of the public about the drug situation in Scottburgh and why you shouldn’t give them money or food.

One of the locals who joined in the walk was Jason McConnell, a representative from Pick n Pay Scott Street. He said that business has not been the same since the beginning of the ‘bogus car guard’ saga.

“Not only do these car guards harass people coming out of our shop, they also lure prostitutes at night and having these people hang around the area has scared off not only holidaymakers, but locals too,” said Mr McConnell.
This was just the first awareness campaign and it was seemingly successful, so one can only hope that the community abides by what has been said and done. Should the situation worsen, this may have to become a more frequent project.
