Last week in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court:
• The ongoing case of a Scottburgh vagrant who was arrested for shoplifting continued. The elderly woman is not in contact with her family and claims to have spent most of her time at a local church. The case was adjourned to May 29 for possible diversion.

• A young man was arrested after being found in possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle in the Umzinto district. The matter was postponed to May 30 for his formal bail application and for further investigation.
• A 57-year-old man from Park Rynie was arrested and released on bail after being found in the possession of 27 grams of dagga. He was a first-time offender, is temporarily employed and has six children to care for, three of whom are still in school. He was fined R200 or 20 days’ imprisonment.

• In an ongoing case, one of two accused housebreakers – an elderly man – was released. The young man who remains in custody has pleaded guilty to theft and housebreaking with intent to steal. The role the second accused played in the matter was not revealed. On December 17 last year, the accused stole four bags of shoe buckles, believed to be worth R2 000, from a property in Park Rynie. While on his way to a scrap dealer, he was arrested by police. The case was postponed to June 1 for trial. The accused remains in police custody.
