Murchison Hospital aims to empower young mothers

The programme gave young mothers time to bond over common experiences.

The education and empowerment programme for young mothers at Murchison Hospital last Friday attempted to help pregnant and parenting teens to gain skills, become leaders in their communities and impart the value of education to their young children.

Organiser of the event, Dr Priti Muzendan, told the Herald that, on any given day, these young women were dealing with family problems, sick children, custody battles and other more pressing problems.

“One of the greatest benefits of the programme was the opportunity for the young mothers to bond over common experiences. We also encouraged the mothers to practise breastfeeding and offer their infants proper nutrition. Most of these girls had never met before and talking about the challenges of healthcare or childcare helped them realise they were not alone,” said Dr Muzendan.

One effect of this programme was to encourage camaraderie among them while helping them find common ground and inspiration from new people and places. Through this programme, the mothers expanded their world view and learned valuable skills for healthy living.
