Current chairman Bavani Pillay told the Herald that the Saiva Vazhipatu Kazhagam of South Africa Port Shepstone Branch was established on June 6, 1993.

“We were fortunate to have a leader like NM Pillay who showed us the path of enlightenment. Our headquarters is the Saiva Vazhipatu Kazhagam of SA in Bayview, Chatsworth, Durban.

“Being a small branch means that it is not always possible for us to embark on large projects. However we are willing to share the spiritual knowledge we have gained over the last 25 years,” explained Ms Pillay.

She pointed out that branch members are available to conduct prayer services in accordance with Saivite rites (a theology that is predominantly related to the Hindu god Shiva).

“Our door is open to all who wish to join us in prayer. It is said that culture gives us identity without which we are nonentities. On this occasion of our 25th anniversary, we appeal to the community to play a more vibrant role in cultural and religious matters.”

Ms Pillay reiterated that serving one’s fellow beings and showing compassion to all living beings is an important part of this journey.

Chairman Bavani Pillay welcomes Thiru Duraivel Maduray (president World Saiva Council-SA branch).

“Therefore charity ranks high on our programme each year, as charity is a cornerstone of Saivism. We have given support to a few organisations since our inception in 1993 to date.”
