The event again attracted a full house of players from as far afield as Johannesburg, Ladysmith, Durban and Richards Bay. To start the popular tournament, a Bhangra and Old School music evening was held at Chico’s buffet restaurant last Friday, where deejay Theo Papli entertained guests with good music.

Saturday saw many spectators and players at the nail-biting Thunee Classic Challenge, where R20 000 was up for grabs, with some 240 players taking part.

The competition is held twice a year with November’s winners from Hibberdene being knocked out in the second round this time.

Proud winners of Saturday’s competition were ‘Victory Boyz’ Lawrence Pillay and Jody Singh from Port Shepstone, winning R10 000. Second placed were ‘Brothers in Arms’ Alryn and Brian Appalsamy from Durban, winning R6 000, with third placed Stan Govender and Tony Pillay from team ‘Hot Shots’ from Umkomaas, taking R4 000.

The winners of the 2018 Thunee Classic Challenge played at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort last Saturday were team ‘Victory Boyz’ Lawrence Pillay (second from left) and Jody Singh of Port Shepstone. Flanking the first time winners are Leonard Khan from Playthunee and Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort’s PR and promotions co-ordinator June Hassein.

Lawrence and Jody have been playing Thunee together for the past five years. This was the third time the local boys had entered and the first time they had won.

Wild Coast Sun organiser of the competition, Anandh Perumal, said the next tournament would be held in November and prize money was set at R20 000.

Mr Perumal thanked all players and sponsors for making the event a great success. “This event hosted by the resort has grown, as is evident from the fact that teams from Johannesburg and even Cape Town entered.”

Now Thunee players can play online at Playthunee and win great prizes. The online game was invented in Durban.
