Sheppie licensing department problems to be resolved, says Ray Nkonyeni Municipality

Council will also be requesting DOT to increase the amount of equipment used in processing applications for driver’s licences, learner’s licences and PDPs.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council wants to see urgent changes in the Port Shepstone Motor Licensing and Testing Centre. This follows numerous challenges that the department has faced over the past few months.

Council resolved to implement a turnaround strategy that would resolve these challenges, which are said to be caused by legal battles between the Department of Transport and the service provider who was supplying the equipment used to process applications.

According to a presentation made by head of Public Safety, Sbusiso Nzimande, to council, following the legal battle, DOT had to change to new equipment, which was then not as user-friendly as the previous equipment.

To solve these problems, council agreed to increase the number of cards issued to people who are going to be served per day.

“The numbers will be increased from 150 to 200,” said Mr Nzimande.

Council will also be requesting DOT to increase the amount of equipment used in processing applications for driver’s licences, learner’s licences and PDPs.

RNM management was also tasked with requesting Grade F centres in Izingolweni, Leisure Bay, Gamalakhe and Hibberdene to reduce the volume of people coming to Port Shepstone.

Management has also promised to ensure proper training of its employees, intensify supervision of the staff working in the centre, explore the option of increasing working hours and explore the option of acquiring more office space for the Port Shepstone Centre.

Council pleaded with motorists to bear with them while these issues were being attended to.
