Water crisis deepens as tankers halted by ‘pressure group’
Tanker services are at a standstill, Ugu has announced.
The supply of water to South Coast consumers encountered yet another set-back today (Tuesday) when it was announced that a group linked to various business forums in the Ugu District had voiced their objection to the tanker service providers being used, bringing delivery of water to the static water tanks to a halt.

According to a statement released by Ugu District Municipality earlier today, the men reportedly stormed into the Ugu Disaster Centre and threatened employees and contractors, demanding to know which companies had been awarded the tenders.
The group claims the companies hired by Ugu to provide trucks to distribute water belong to businessmen from Durban, to friends of Ugu officials, and municipal officials from other municipalities such as Umdoni.
They want local companies to be appointed to provide these services.
Meanwhile, Ugu has said it would engage with this group in an attempt to find an amicable solution which is placing further pressure on the community, some of whom had been without water for a week or more.
“The water tanker services are at a standstill till further notice,” said Ugu spokesman, France Zama.
WATER UPDATE FROM UGU: 05/06/18
“NORTH PORT SHEPSTONE:
Please note that some communities supplied by this system from Umtentweni to Hibberdene are back online as of this morning with the exception of some parts Southport and Anerley that are still affected. We hope to have those resolved as soon as possible.
SOUTHERN SYSTEM:
All reservoirs supplying the areas of Margate, Ext 3, Ramsgate, Nositha, Nkulu and Msikaba have built up enough supply. An airlock is suspected as teams will be checking and bleeding air for supply to resume as soon as possible.
UMTHAMVUNA:
Normal supply has resumed for some areas from Southbroom to Port Edward. It is the high lying areas which may still be experiencing problems. Teams will be bleeding air from the pipelines to ensure that normal supply resumes.
We are working towards restoring supply also in the inland areas of Kwanzimakwe, Ezinqoleni, Kwaxolo, Gcilima, Thelawayeka, Mvuntshini, Shobamdlanzi, Mbecuka, Florida, Nodalane, Shobeni and Mlazane.
UMZIMKHULU SYSTEM
The tower supplying the areas of Protea Park, Albersville/Palmview, Location 7, Pelican and Woodpecker is not building up enough capacity to resume normal water supply. Technicians are working on it.”
