Everything you need to know about this Saturday’s Paddle Out for Sharks and Ocean Conservation

The entire morning will be jammed packed with an exciting agenda of ocean orientated events for both children and adults.

This Saturday, June 9 at 7am ocean lovers will unite for this year’s Paddle Out for Sharks and Ocean Conservation, to be held at Sony Evans Small Craft Harbour in Shelly Beach.

Everyone from paddlers, surfers, divers and fishermen to conservationists and other interested parties are urged to unite to raise ‘on the ground’ awareness of marine conservation and the global plight of sharks and to change public perceptions of sharks.

The event will also be to mark World Oceans Day on June 8 which is a global celebration, with hundreds of events around the world celebrating our oceans.

There are available spaces on the boats if anyone is keen to book their spot, free of charge. Booking is essential, contact Carrie at 074 760 1722.

Saturday’s program: 

 

07:00 – Surfers, children from Give a child a home, general public and reporters arrive

07:00 – Welcome the public by Roland Mauz

07:00-07:15 – Boat briefing for children going on the boats (+- 18) and general public (+- 15)

07:30 – Face painter arrives

07:15-08.00 – Boats launch and surfers paddle out

  • Boats launch first. Paddlers after final boat launch (NSRI first boat- Shona)
  • Children not going out on boat = face painting between 7.30 and 9.30 maybe 10am and NSRI show around (older kids can join in after they are back from sea 9:00-9.30)
  • 08:00-09:00- Photos taken out at sea/ general shark awareness/ flowers thrown into the sea/ start paddle back to shore/beach
  • Must-Byt boats come back first with the children

09:00-09:30- Surfers served coffee and muffins (Roland and John)

09:00-09:30- Fruit and water for children (snack)

09:30-10.30- Bike rides (older than 6) Bike club and car rides (younger than 6) BMW

*please note some of the times mix in together, some children can be eating the snack while others have faces painted and vice versa.

10:30-11:00- Steve Ocean and shark talk

11:00-11:30- Lunch (thanks to SPAR) Sandwiches, chips and juice

11:30-12:00- Sandcastle competition

12:00-13:00- Hand-outs for children (clothing, goodies etc.)
