Margate Moves: What a horrible waterless week

No one denies workers have rights, but these South African Municipal Workers' Union members have once again resorted to vandalism and thuggery for their own selfish needs.

THANKS to Ugu District Municipality workers, many residents, especially those living in Ramsgate, are having a horrible time being without water for more than a week.

No one denies workers have rights, but these South African Municipal Workers’ Union members have once again resorted to vandalism and thuggery for their own selfish needs.

They will not get any empathy from the communities as they have shown no regard for the elderly, hospital patients and schoolchildren. They simply do not care how their reckless behaviour impacts on people’s lives.

It is also disturbing to read some of the comments made on local social media platforms. For instance one person suggested “invading the municipal manager’s home”… what good will that do apart from adding to the anarchy?

But for all the negativity there has been some amazing positivity. And one exceptional star has been ward councillor Dave Watson. He has done his best to keep everyone informed – to the best of his knowledge and he has been tireless in his efforts to ensure the static water tanks were kept filled.

The verbal abuse dished out on those chat groups was totally uncalled for.

No refuse collection

Margate’s central business district looked like dump site last weekend. Litter was strewn along Marine Drive and the rubbish bins were overflowing with trash. Not a welcoming sight for a holiday town.

Apparently the street cleaning contract came to an end on May 31. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality has yet to award a new contract. Talk about putting the cart before the horse. The winter holiday season is fast approaching, hopefully the municipality will have its cleaning services in place before the visitors arrive.

Keeping Southbroom beautiful

Southbroom’s ratepayers’ association arranged minor repairs to the Umkobi beach ablutions and repaired lights at the the beach parking at Granny’s Pool.

Three additional speed humps have been erected in Outlook and Beach roads to improve safety.

The revamp of the tennis clubhouse has been met with many compliments and the club’s gardens are also being replanted with indigenous plants.

Southbroom Bowling Club is also having a facelift which should soon be completed. More good news for the village is that the filling station has reopened.

A 5 000 litre water tank has been erected at the Southbroom Police Station and is available to residents to use during water outages.
