Local Sassa offices closed as officials take part in national wage strike

It is not clear when the strike will end.

Those making use of the Sassa Port Shepstone offices were left unattended to as officials had boarded a bus for Pietermaritzburg early this morning to join the national strike.

The strike over wages comes after Minister of Social Development Susan Shabangu reportedly failed to consider the union’s demands.

The Public Servants’ Association (PSA) which represents most workers at Sassa, has been involved in negotiations since February, with no agreement reached.

Demands included salary increases of between 13 and 15 percent, annual leave, housing allowance,  danger allowance and other issues.

One Southport resident said this had inconvenienced many beneficiaries as it was month end.

“I couldn’t renew my card at the Post Office and I was told to go to Sassa offices only to get there and find I could not get help,” they said.

It is not clear when the strike will end.
