Port Shepstone Maritime Museum to be renamed after struggle icon

The decision was taken by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council at a recent meeting.

Plans to rename the Port Shepstone Maritime Museum are in the pipeline.

The recently built museum will be named after the late struggle icon, Winnie Madikizela Mandela, – a decision taken recently by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council.

However, the KZN Department of Arts and Culture still needed to give the green light for the renaming, said municipal manager, Max Mbili.

Although the multi-million rand project was completed last year, it was still not operational.

Mr Mbili said council had made several requests for the department of arts and culture to officially hand over the building to RNM.

“MEC Bongi Moloi has not yet given a date for the official handover,” he said.

Mr Mbili said they understood the MEC had a busy schedule but were hoping the municipality would at least be allowed to use the building in the interim

“When buildings are left unused for too long, vandalism can occur and we wish to avoid this.”

The project, which cost more than R17-million, had also angered some, several of whom pointed out that the building was already beginning to rust.

“Why would government build this with taxpayers’ money and then let it stand for almost a year without it being used? Where is the logic in that?” asked one Port Shepstone resident.

The museum features a state-of-the-art amphitheatre, accommodating 50 to 60 people, an exhibition area, archive storerooms, ablutions for disabled people, a boardroom with electronic conference facilities, two offices, 11 surveillance cameras and a cleaner’s room.
