Sea Park postboxes need urgent attention

Resident Floris Kotze pointed out that due to the broken roof, some of the mail became wet and damaged when it rained.

Sea Park residents are not happy with the appalling state of the 300 postboxes in the hamlet.

Rusted and falling apart, the postboxes appeared to not have been maintained for many years, and were in desperate need of a revamp.

When the Herald visited the postboxes on Tuesday this week, a large chunk of metal from the roof was lying on the ground.

Resident Floris Kotze pointed out that due to the broken roof, some of the mail became wet and damaged when it rained.

“I have spent a lot of money on multi-purpose lubricants to open my postbox in order to retrieve my mail,” he said.

Another resident, Jodi Slade, said he had moved to the coast in 2003, and no maintenance had been conducted since then.

“Many of the postboxes don’t open, while the doors of others have rusted off. It’s so bad that the back of the postboxes have been wired together.”

Mr Slade wondered how the Post Office would cope with social grant payouts if it could not even maintain its postboxes.

The Herald contacted Johan Kruger, the Post Office’s media spokesman, who said the postboxes were on the list for repair but that funding was not available at this time.

He did however add the boxes would hopefully be repaired by September this year.
