The resort’s PR and promotions manager Sandi Burger told the Herald that Des suffered a heart attack after having a fabulous day on the beach with friends, doing what he loved most, fishing at the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort’s fishing tournament.
“Des was born on January 22, 1952 and educated in Durban. He attended Mansfield Junior School, Glenwood High School and trained in water and wastewater management at Durban University of Technology (DUT),” explained Sandi.
Prior to commencing work at the Wild Coast Sun, as a water treatment technician 23 years ago, he worked for the Durban Municipality in a variety of positions including pest control technician and senior process operator.
Sandi pointed out that in his younger days, Des was very active, serving as a voluntary lifeguard at Addington Beach in Durban. “He also ran the Two Oceans and Comrades Marathons. On moving to Port Edward, his love for fishing was evident and he spent most of his free time on the beach catching up with the other fishermen, enjoying a good laugh and discussion about the day’s fishing and the ‘big one’ that got away. He had a great sense of humour.”
Des was a very well known and sought after house sitter. He loved dogs and when he was house sitting, everyone knew that not only was their house safe, but their pets were being looked after like royalty. He will be sorely missed by all of his friends and colleagues at the resort. He is survived by his sister Diana de Beer.
