Tweni Talk: Community rallies to repair damaged steps

Anyone who can assist in anyway is requested to please get in touch.

LAST week’s fire on Tweni’s beach walkway was a shocker – it destroyed plastic stairs, the kiosk’s front fascia and much of the foliage on the bank. Thank goodness the inside of the building was not damaged – a huge bouquet to the fire department. The community is contributing to the rehabilitation – plants need to be donated and planted and the stairs need rebuilding. Anyone who can assist in any way is requested to please get in touch.

Something fishy

Sardines were netted at the Sandspit causing ‘a traffic nightmare’ according to Gill van Heerden, with people driving recklessly. It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy, but please concentrate and practise safety first. This time of the year is a bonus to all the fishermen and divers because all the bigger fish follow the shoals. There are not many birds in tow this year, but there is definitely more shark action. They have even been spotted from the shore, which is close. Umtentweni Whale Deck is a good place to be looking from. The Tweni Conservancy team has been sanding, varnishing and fixing up the whale deck and it is starting to look good again.

Market day

The recent Muddy Boots Market was quiet, but successful. There is a great vibe at Muddy Boots, which makes for a very pleasant morning for both shoppers and traders.

Johan and Mary Smit set up their wares at the Muddy Boots Market.

A big thanks to Calvin Fourie for generously picking big, heavy avos for the traders – and to awesome ‘catcher’ Deon van Rensburg (who only dropped a couple). The lucky draw winner was Soobiah Padavattan.

Well done

Young Elri van Zyl was awarded a certificate for Land Service and also won a talent competition and Clirize Berry received leadership certificates at Sweetdale Youth Camp in Margate. Youths are challenged with new and demanding activities facilitated to help them to develop and improve personal skills. The physical challenges of life in the outdoors help develop self-reliance and personal responsibility.
