Drug dealer jailed for Umbango woman’s murder

Sherille Naidoo was raped and stabbed to death in 2022.

Aphiwe Mashendele Deyi (38) was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on May 25, for the murder of Sherille Naidoo (50) of Umbango.

He received a life sentence for murder and a further 15 years for rape. The sentences will run concurrently.

Deyi was also declared unfit to possess a firearm; and his name will be included in the National Register of Sex Offenders.

Naidoo’s body was found by a passers-by in bushes along Torwood Crescent on August 18, 2022. She had been sexually assaulted and stabbed several times.

Naidoo lived about 300m from where her body was found.

Detective Captain Lami Mjweni, with 33 of experience in the detective environment, was assigned to the case.

The DNA evidence found at the scene pointed detectives towards Deyi who was from the Eastern Cape, but living in Port Shepstone.

After sourcing information and tracing him, police arrested Deyi who was a known drug dealer in the area on May 31, 2023.

Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Anton Kapp commended Mjweni and his team for the conviction and reaffirmed his confidence in Ugu District detectives. “Perpetrators of violence against women will, through systematic investigations and stellar detective skills, be removed from society,” said Kapp.
