NSRI to the rescue at last weekend’s Mercury Ski-boat Fishing Festival compo

The sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn and its crew sprang into action on both occasions to save the day.

NSRI Shelly Beach duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from the fishing boat, Stolla, taking part in the Tuna Bonanza fishing competition last Friday.
 
 
This after the boat reported complete steering failure and the mechanical failure of one motor while taking part in the fishing competition.
“The sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn was launched and  found that a fellow fishing boat had taken the crew off the casualty boat and brought them safely to shore,” said Jeremiah Jackson, NSRI Shelly Beach station commander.
The skipper remained onboard the casualty boat. An NSRI crewman was put onboard to assist, a towline was rigged and  the casualty boat Stolla was towed safely to shore.

Then on Saturday afternoon, the fishing boat, Shelly on Sea, also taking part in the fishing competition, reported mechanical failure at the backline off Shelly Beach.

“The sea rescue craft Spirit of Dawn was launched and  found that again, a fellow fishing boat had taken the fishing crew off the casualty boat and tKEN them safely to shore,” said Mr Jackson.

The skipper remained onboard the casualty boat, a towline was rigged and the sea rescue craft proceeded to tow the casualty boat towards the beach through the surf.

In the surfline the casualty boat threatened to capsize and the tow was released.

The sea rescue craft beached and the NSRI crew, assisted by local fishermen using their tractors, rigged a rope line to the casualty boat, which was in the surfline.

Working from the beach they were able to get the casualty boat onto the rocks from where it was pulled around to the beach and recovered.

NSRI thanks local fishermen, skippers and members of the public who assisted in these operations.
