All systems go for ANC provincial conference

Lower South Coast Region ANC branch delegates are gearing up to make their way to Durban for the ANC provincial conference which takes place from today (Thursday) until this Saturday (21st).

This follows successful negotiations between the provincial task team (PTT) and the disgruntled members from three regions – the LSC, Moses Mabhida and Harry Gwala – who had filed an urgent court interdiction stopping the conference from sitting last month.

The parties were due back in court last Thursday but resolved the matter prior to the hearing.

According to the PTT, after several delays a memorandum of agreement was signed with members of the regions which led to the group withdrawing its court application and ensured that the long-awaited conference would now take place.

Both parties said it was hoped that the conference would see the election of a new united leadership that would re-unite the ANC.

The PTT also said that concerns raised by unhappy party members in the three regions had been addressed.

However some LSC region branch members said this might cause more problems down the line as they felt some of the issues they had raised had been swept under the carpet.

These issues included alleged ‘gate-keeping’, vote rigging, unfair processes, and bogus membership.

However, ANC deputy secretary-general, Jessie Duarte, said province was ‘in a good space’ and the conference was expected to run smoothly.
