New wheels for plucky three-legged hound Jozi

Zola walks Jozi four times a day so she can become accustomed to the harness.

The dream to put Jozi the three-legged dog on wheels has come true.

In February this year, Penny Taylor of Harmony Hill Rescue sent out a request for help to put Jozi into a wheeled cart after the dog’s leg was amputated.

Based on the saying from Brahma Kumaris, ‘where there is determination, success will become the garland around your neck’, Penny donned a garland of determination to help Jozi.

Fittingly, last Friday morning those close to Jozi united and all sported colourful floral garlands to celebrate Jozi’s new wheels, custom-made and imported from the United States.

Beautiful Jozi.

Jozi is a beautiful, brave, friendly and intelligent dog. Penny describes her as a ‘ray of sunshine’ who despite her disability, loves life and everyone (including animals) around her.

The problem with Jozi is that after the amputation, her right front leg is carrying most of her body weight, putting too much stress on the leg.

Jozi was rescued by Wendy Millward after the caretaker of a holiday cottage in Sea Park was asked by the landlord to get rid of her.

“Unable to keep her, I brought her to Harmony Hill and Penny has been just amazing,” said Wendy.

Jozi has been fitted with new wheels.

Jozi is still getting used to her new set of wheels, but once the adjustable harness is fitted to her body, her front leg is straightened, taking the weight off the leg.

Penny said Harmony Hill Hotel’s clients and people from far and wide had opened their hearts to Jozi and been ‘absolutely incredible’ with their donations.

“Jozi has touched hearts from all walks of life and through public support we managed to raise R22 000 toward getting her fully mobile again,” she said.

Beautiful Jozi.

Harmony Hills’s dog walker, Zola Mhlekwa, is Jozi’s dedicated caregiver.

Renate Haussmann, South Africa’s champion dog carter, will be training Jozi on how to handle her cart.

“Every part of the puzzle has come together beautifully,” added Penny.

Making Jozi’s life colourful are Wendy Millward (back left) and Penny Taylor with Zola Mhlekwa, Thembakazi Ntsetsha and Lungisani Mchunu of Harmony Hill in front.

Penny wanted to give Jozi a second chance at a better quality of life, and that is exactly what she has achieved.
