Gifts, lunch for Flower Foundation seniors on Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela's life has been an inspiration to the world.

People all over the world spent 67 minutes giving back to humankind in honour of one of the world’s greatest leaders, Nelson Mandela, on Mandela Day yesterday (Wednesday). It was no different on the South Coast where the women of ‘Margate is Magic – Dynamic Divas’ hosted lunch, gift packs and a wonderful day’s entertainment for seniors at the Flower Foundation in Port Shepstone.

Sonia Maharaj of ‘Margate is Magic – Dynamic Divas’ said Mandela Day was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said: “It is in your hands now.”

Mrs Maharaj reiterated that the message behind Mandela Day was simple.

“Nelson Mandela’s life has been an inspiration to the world. Each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better,” she explained.

She added that Mandela Day not only celebrates his life, but is also a global call to action for people to recognise their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. “The day hopes to inspire people to embrace the values that Mandela shared. These values include democracy, freedom, equality, diversity, reconciliation and respect.”

Many people and organisations around the world take part in many activities to promote the day. “These activities include volunteering, sport, art, education, music and culture.”
