Mark Fish football clinic identifies local talent

Standout players were selected for further development opportunities.

The Mark Fish Foundation and Sonani Academy hosted coaches and young players at a two-day clinic at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Gamalakhe recently.

Also in attendance was Charlton Athletic Football Club with four Union of European Football Associations A-licensed coaches. Fish played for Charlton Athletic FC from 2000-2005.

According to Fish, the clinic was open to coaches and players between the ages of six and 19 and was a great opportunity for local teams to learn from qualified international coaches.

“The event featured an U17 match between the Ugu squad and Sonani Academy. This match served as a talent identification platform, where standout players were selected for further development opportunities and received guidance from the visiting coaches,” said Fish.

One of the local organisers, Ayanda Mkhwanazi said there were friendly games against Sonani Academy U15 and Gamalakhe Squad. Other games were played between Sonani Academy U17 and Izintondolo FC, where players were also selected to be groomed for professional football.
