Early start for annual Grandparents’ Walk in St Mike’s

The event is one of the most popular and longest-running.

FOR more than 30 years Hibiscus Coast winters have been synonymous with sardines and sunny days. Coinciding with this, the grandparents’ walk, hosted by the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast (Margate and Uvongo) last Wednesday, is now in its 34th year.

Rotary Anns’ secretary Kitty Steenmans said that with about 400 sprightly seniors taking part this year, the event, sponsored by Hibiscus Retirement Village, is one of the most popular and longest-running sporty happenings on the South Coast.

Barbara van Eck of Uvongo.

“It is always a festive occasion, with many spectators cheering on the entrants from the sidelines and plenty of grandchildren and well-behaved dogs joining the strollers, walkers and striders en route,” explained Ms Steenmans.

Sandy Gerntholtz of Margate.

“The Hibiscus Coast Rotary Anns and Rotarians see it as a wonderful way to honour our senior citizens and to thank them for all they have contributed to the South Coast. Although there is a fund-raising aspect to it, the main aim of the walk is to hold the event specifically for them.”

Anita Olivier of Southbroom.
