Joburg City tourism head to take over at Ugu South Coast Tourism

Her plans include making enormous strides to put the South Coast on the map and she is looking forward to her new job.

Meet the new Ugu South Coast Tourism chief executive officer, Phelisa Mangcu.

Ms Mangcu is the former city of Johannesburg director of tourism and economic development who has vast knowledge in the tourism sector.

The new CEO will take up her position in the second week of August 2018, replacing Justin Mackrory whose contact has come to an end.

Her plans include making enormous strides to put the South Coast on the map and she is looking forward to her new job.

The new CEO reportedly has an impressive tourism track record. She began her career in tourism in America in 1995, working for the Washington DC Government’s Tourism Office.

Ugu SC Tourism chairman, Joy Crutchfield, said what really impressed the interviewing panel was her broad experience on tourism and her successes.

The new CEO has served the Trump International Hotel and Tower, managed the travel and accommodation component of the 7th All Africa Games ’99 and served the Industrial Development Corporation as a business analyst, tourism and corporate social investment manager.

Her qualifications include a master’s certificate in destination management from the George Washington University, a master of arts degree obtained at the University of the Witwatersrand and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Fort Hare.

“Leading the Ugu SC Tourism as well as balancing the needs of both the public and private sector will come easily to Ms Mangcu. She comes to Ugu District having served Jo’burg Tourism for 10 years,” Joy Crutchfield said.

Ms Crutchfield also said the new CEO’s experience in visitor services bureaux, linking tourism operators to Alexandra Township and the recognition she received for the active role she played in winning the Global Enterprise Congress (GEC) 2017 bid are all valued strings to her bow.

“We trust that our new CEO will receive a warm South Coast welcome. We also thank Mr Mackrory for the valued direction he gave over the past five years; he will always be a special friend of the South Coast.”
