Umtamvuna Views: Winter dinner in front of the fire was wonderful
After the meal everyone stepped outside to watch the magnificent longest lunar eclipse of the century.
The catering committee of Mbabala Lodge treated 33 residents to a great ‘Winter Dinner’ evening last Friday night. With a big fire roaring in the fireplace, diners enjoyed various delicious soups and all sorts of fresh breads and crusty rolls.

A lovely malva pudding and homemade custard rounded off the supper. After the meal everyone stepped outside to watch the magnificent longest lunar eclipse of the century. What a spectacular ending to a wonderful evening.
Total eclipse
LAST Friday night’s lunar eclipse certainly did not disappoint! At about 8.15pm, the bottom edge of the full moon showed a little ‘nibble bite’ which developed into a great big chunk. The black shadow of the earth slowly rose across the face of the moon like a high tide until it went completely black. Some clouds intruded every now and again but it was a ‘once in a lifetime’ spectacle with the bright yellow star of Venus also exceptionally bright throughout. Your scribe happened to look up at the sky at about midnight and was thrilled to see the tail end of the shadow disappearing over the top edge of the bright ball-moon. Total eclipses apparently only occur about once every hundred years.

Club treat
The Trafalgar Garden Club met at the beautiful Uvongo home of Haydee Bothma last week and members commented that Haydee’s home could have been featured in a glossy magazine. The decor was pearly white and pristine (even the piano is white) and has an air of quiet opulence.
The rolling lawns of the palm-lined garden are inviting and the dappled shade and curved beds are a treat to explore.
Twenty one members thoroughly enjoyed the outing and the delicious tea afterwards.
Fun Friday
The monthly quiz and braai held at the Lions’ Clubhouse in Ramsgate was well supported on Friday night … even though entrants were continually popping outside to check on the progress of the lunar eclipse. About forty people knuckled down to answer the varied questions posed by quizmaster Vernon Maddison. Thirty percent of the points were allocated to soccer world cup flag identification and those teams with male members, (in particular ‘soccer fan’ males) were at a definite advantage. There were lots of laughs and good-natured heckling. ‘Chasers’ emerged as the winning team and the team was thrilled to collect its prizes, kindly sponsored by John Webster, project coordinator for the new Wydenham Retirement Village near Umkomaas. The quiz/braai is held on the last Friday of every month and president Warren Theron can be contacted at 072 4149589 for more information.
