Umtamvuna Views: Pamper and spoil all women this month

May the appreciation continue for the rest of the year.

ALTHOUGH women deserve to be celebrated 365 days a year, it is nice that August 9th is set aside specially to honour women. Your scribe hopes that most women are spoiled and shown much love by their families tomorrow – and may the appreciation continue for the rest of the year!

Sad tidings

Long-standing resident of Port Edward, Val Beauchop (54), died of a massive heart attack on July 25. She leaves two sons, Cameron and Clayton. Sincere condolences are extended to her family.

Another death is that of Robert Francis (80) of Banners Rest Village, who had suffered from ill-health for a number of years. He and his wife Jill had celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary in March. The couple emigrated from England in 1975 and settled in Port Edward in 2005.

Conservancy meander

A group of keen amateur botanists walk together every week in various leafy, forested areas in the vicinity. Last week they were invited to walk in the Kongweni River Conservancy in Margate, which covers an area of about seven hectares and includes grasslands, forests and streams.

Kongweni River Conservancy visitors Steve Botha (left), Pat Fourie (middle) and Allison Loumeau inspect a prickly ‘thorny rope’ vine which has thorns of about 10cm.

Conservancy chairman Gary Holburn led the group and pointed out all sorts of interesting plants and trees.

He commented that it is a constant battle to clear paths and eradicate invader plants with virtually no financial support from anywhere.

The lovely little area, strewn with aloes, red hot pokers, tree ferns and a myriad lovely old trees and flowering shrubs has become a haven for criminals who throw their unwanted debris all over the place.

Recently a fire ravaged the area and it is suspected it was started by criminals. The fire damaged a number of protea (and other) trees beyond recovery.

It is little oases like this, where people can commune with nature, that provide balance in the crazy concrete jungle.

Whilst walking in the Kongweni River Conservancy in Margate Colin Taylor of Trafalgar was disgusted to find a large amount of discarded material from Eskom heavy duty cables. Thieves had obviously removed the valuable copper and thrown the debris in the pristine conservancy reserve.

Well done, Judith

Last week was a treat for art and literature lovers. The annual ‘Art by the Sea’ display was officially opened at the Margate Art Museum. There is amazing work to be seen, all done by local artists, so do go pop in and enjoy the show. Port Edward artist Judith Simpson was thrilled to have one of her paintings chosen as ‘best seascape’. Judith loves to use watercolour and pen.

Excellent event

The annual Ramsgate Book and Art Festival was a veritable ‘feast’ for everyone! Authors chatted about their books, children delighted in the antics of storytellers and artists demonstrated techniques. It was a varied and fun festival which is something to look forward to annually.

Willie sings

Blind gospel singer Willie Botha from Gauteng, who has never been to Port Edward, is thrilled to be performing at the Port Edward Methodist Church this Sunday, August 12th, at 3pm. There is no entrance fee, but an offering will be taken.

All news to Philippa.
