Recently in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court:
• A 22-year-old made his first appearance, charged with theft after being arrested on July 31 for stealing R300 worth of items from a shop in the Umzinto district. As he has no previous convictions, is unemployed, dependant on his grandmother and unable to afford bail, the court released him on free bail and expects him to return on August 10 for his next appearance.
• After being found in the unlawful possession of a cellphone worth R6 500, a 42-year-old man was arrested on July 10 at a car wash in Umkomaas and kept in police custody until his first appearance.The court was informed that he had a previous conviction, for the unlawful possession of a firearm when he was 16 years old. He had spent eight months in prison. The court fixed bail at R300 and the case was postponed to August 17 for investigation and outstanding witness statements.

• A 29-year-old unemployed man was arrested in Roseneath, Umkomaas after being found in the possession of two grams of dagga. The accused pleaded guilty. As he had no previous convictions and wasted no court time with his plea, he was cautioned and discharged with the dagga being forfeited to the state.
• An elderly man appeared in court again after being arrested in March this year for being in the unlawful possession of dagga and liquor which was being sold from a shack.

A packet containing 99 small packets of dagga was found. A potato bag containing loose dagga was also found. The 99 small packets weighed in at 245 grams and the potato bag at 127 grams. The man was detained at Umkomaas Saps.
