Child (8) drowns in Mzamba lagoon

After an extensive search operation, police search and rescue divers located and recovered the body of the child from the water.

NSRI Port Edward duty crew was activated following reports from lifeguards of a drowning in progress at the Mzamba lagoon near the Wild Coast Sun Hotel and Casino Resort last Saturday.

A sea rescue jet-ski craft was towed to the scene and launched. NSRI Port Edward rescue swimmers, a police search and rescue unit, the SA police services and Med-Evac ambulance services responded.

“A lifeguard using a Malibu rescue board was conducting a search in the lagoon for the boy who had disappeared while swimming,” said John Nicholas, NSRI Port Edward station commander.

Police search and rescue divers joined the search and NSRI rescue swimmers assisted with free dive search efforts. Thee NSRI jet-ski was deployed to assist in a surface water search.
