Umtamvuna Views: Inferno destroys Leisure Bay home

The flames from the house had also set alight an adjacent pine forest.

A RAGING fire destroyed a thatched Leisure Bay home on Monday afternoon. The house was undergoing roofing renovations and it’s presumed that a spark set the thatch alight.

The owner contacted GP Security and a reaction vehicle arrived on the scene very quickly. By all accounts, the security officer swiftly handled the emergency – he closed all doors to prevent ‘flash over’ and even managed to save some of the distraught owners’ belongings. Protection Services and two fire engines arrived promptly as well. The flames from the house had also set alight an adjacent pine forest and neighbours were really concerned. Neighbour Randall Botha commended all the emergency services who assisted with their speedy, efficient actions. Fortunately there were no injuries.

Sally scoops gold

Port Edward boasts a brand new ‘world champion’! Sally Tulleken of Banners Rest Village bagged the award in the ‘Newcomer Gold Division’ (over 60). She joined the group of 13 local line dancers from ‘Danceinline’ studio who travelled to Blackpool, UK, a few weeks ago. They travelled with coach Noel Roos to compete at the annual World Dance Masters competition.

Over a thousand dancers from 25 countries took part in the prestigious event and a number of local dancers did very well in the competition. Sally (69) has been dancing for about eight years and worked very hard to be ‘step-perfect’ for this year’s competition. Coach Noel dedicated many extra hours to coach his ‘team’ and their smooth performances can be credited to him. The dancers performed at the Wild Coast Sun last Saturday at the ever-popular ‘Dance Celebration’ show.

Raptor survives

An adult fish eagle was found in a half-dead condition on Broadmoor Farm near Port Edward last week . The injured bird was taken to Michelle Pearson who runs the Second Chance Avian Rescue facility in Shelly Beach. The bird was taken to veterinarian Leon Bruggeman in Margate where it was thoroughly checked.

The vet found nothing wrong with the raptor and after spending a few restful hours at Michelle’s sanctuary, the big bird recovered completely. Michelle believes it probably had an ‘altercation with the electric fence’ on the farm which rendered him incapacitated for a number of hours.

Michelle returned the bird to the farm where it was released near the dam. It flew off strongly and hopefully will have no long-term effects from the ordeal.

Michelle has single-handedly operated the rescue facility from her home for the past six years. She relies on donations and often worries that she will have to close her doors for lack of funding. If anyone would like to assist this amazingly devoted animal lover, please contact Michelle at 083 2366765.

Happy birthday

Marcia Nell, a renowned ‘tree-hugger’ from Leisure Bay, celebrated her 73rd birthday on August 24th. Daughter Tanita Bezuidenhout travelled from Gauteng to celebrate with her mother.
