Jarred survives life-threatening infection

The teen is now recovering at home after having been diagnosed with a severe beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection.

What began as a mild fever turned into a lengthy hospital stay for young Creston College pupil, Jarred Pillay (13).

Jarred, who lives in Marburg, recently spent six weeks in Port Shepstone Regional Hospital fighting a deadly infection which nearly claimed his life.

For two of those weeks, he was in a coma.

The teen is now recovering at home after having been diagnosed with a severe beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection.

According to his father, Danny Pillay, Jarred first fell ill with fever-like symptoms at the end of June.

“He became dehydrated, his throat was sore, he had a rash on his leg which later developed into a lump and his eyes became jaundiced.

Mr Pillay took his son to hospital where the initial diagnosis was appendicitis.

This was however ruled out after a laparoscopy was performed, leaving doctors at a loss as to what the problem could be.

“His condition became worse. Within three days his body began swelling and he went into septic shock,” said Mr Pillay.

“His liver, lungs and kidneys started shutting down.”

According to Mr Pillay, Jarred’s body swelled to four times its normal size.

“The doctors were wonderful,” he said. “They worked around the clock to help him, with some travelling from as far as Durban to offer their services.”

The gravely ill teenager was moved to ICU and placed on dialysis five times.

He has not yet returned to school, and his return to health is progressing slowly.

The Pillay family thanked all the doctors, nurses and other medical personnel at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital for their assistance and support.
