They tried to give chase but the man disappeared into the dense vegetation. Security guard Mandla Mbhelesaid their main concern was to look into the bag. “When opened the bag, we were surprised to find a live sea turtle.”

Kav Manawer, who lives in Seaview Road noticed the security officers. When he saw the turtle, Mr Manawer, who is a member of the Umbango River Conservancy, immediately contacted the SPCA. He and other concerned bystanders  kept the turtle hydrated by dousing it with water.

The sea turtle was collected by the SPCA,  and it will be taken to KZN Wildlife.

“It looked fine and was under no stress. Luckily the guards were in the right place at the right time and saved this beautiful turtle,” said Mr Manawer. Read more on this story in next week’s Herald.
