Devoted Rotarian mourned

Suresh Autar was a Charter Member of the recently formed Aliwal Shoal Rotary Club.

The Rotarians of District 9370 extend condolences to the Autar family and those whose lives were touched by the remarkable man that was Suresh Autar (73), who died on May 18.

For more than 30 years Suresh lived the true spirit of Rotary, a life built on service, fellowship, humility and compassion.

As a proud Charter Member of the recently formed Aliwal Shoal Rotary Club, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to the youth portfolio, believing deeply that the future of every community rests in the hands of its young people.

While Rotary evolved over the years through the “Future Vision” initiative aimed at modernising and simplifying traditions, Suresh remained proudly rooted in the values and protocols of the old Rotary he loved dearly.

He treasured its traditions, respected its discipline and carried its spirit with pride and sincerity. His role as Sergeant at Arms was delivered with wit, warmth and purpose.

Fellow Rotarians will fondly remember his legendary raffle prizes which were often nothing more extravagant than a packet of wine gums, but somehow in Suresh’s hands they became moments of laughter, fellowship and joy.

He had a wonderful sense of humour. Suresh’s passion for people was immense, particularly for the elderly and the youth. He understood the importance of caring for those who had paved the way, while also nurturing those who would shape tomorrow.

Even in his final days, his focus remained on empowering the youth. He had been tirelessly working to establish a new Interact Club at Umzinto Secondary School. The club was due to be formally chartered by Suresh himself. Although fate intervened, the club was chartered on May 25.

His dedication to youth development extended beyond the classroom. Suresh also ensured that two Grade 11 learners from the school attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Course hosted by the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone.

To Rotarians across the district, Suresh was more than a fellow member. His energy and unwavering commitment to service made every gathering and every project more meaningful.

The Rotary family has lost a devoted servant and a treasured friend. Still, his legacy will continue in the youth he inspired, every person he uplifted and every act of kindness he performed so selflessly. Rest in peace Suresh. Your legacy lives on.
