Singing sensation Shashika comes to town

From childhood she spread a message of peace through her music.

South African-born singer Shashika Mooruth had an interest from childhood in spreading a message of peace through her music. And this she definitely did, when she performed at a concert at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre last Saturday.

Shashika told the Herald that she embarked on Hindustani classical training only after completing her university education but she loves to experiment with different styles. “As a ‘conscious’ artist I do not restrict myself to any genre. I aim, not just to entertain, but to create a positive shift in the consciousness of my listeners, hence my performances range from classical to pop, kirtan to folk to Bollywood, in fact allowing my voice to roam as a free spirit, singing from my soul,” she explained.

By the age of 14 years, she had sung to some of the largest audiences in South Africa, raising funds for old age homes, orphanages, charitable trusts, missionaries and spiritual organisations.
